Technical analysis for 17th September 2026
We finally have the Fed decision, and it was more hawkish than the equity market wanted.
The Fed raised rates 25bp to 3.75%–4.00%, its first increase in more than three years. Chair Kevin Warsh said further tightening may be needed, and markets are now leaning toward another increase as soon as October. Wall Street initially rallied but reversed: the S&P 500 closed 0.44% lower at 7,551.81.
There is one significant piece of relief this morning: oil is falling. Brent is around $105–106, while the long end of the Treasury market has steadied around the crucial 5% area. Gold, interestingly, has recovered towards $4,345 despite the stronger dollar.
And today we move straight on to another major event… Bank of England.
My preferred trade for the FTSE100 is a pullback into 10690–700 that holds, followed by another attack on 10741. If R1 then breaks and survives the retest, I think 10780/90 becomes a realistic objective.
The alternative is equally clean: if 10735-745 rejects hard, I'd look for the move back towards 10700/685. Today's BoE decision could ultimately determine which side of that range wins.
