Technical analysis for 14th October 2026
Global markets are entering an important session today, with US inflation data set to determine whether the recent recovery in government bonds can continue.
The FTSE 100 and DAX finished yesterday almost unchanged, while the S&P 500 slipped marginally as investors assessed mixed US bank earnings and renewed concerns about AI valuations.
Overnight, Asian technology shares have recovered some of Tuesday's losses, but oil prices are climbing again following further attacks on Saudi Arabian infrastructure.
The key question is whether today's inflation figures will allow bond yields to continue easing or reignite fears of another Federal Reserve interest-rate increase.
The technical picture is interesting today because the daily and 30-minute charts are sending slightly different messages. The daily chart has improved considerably over the past week. Price has recovered above its 10 and 25 EMAs, daily RSI is back above 50, and the recent recovery has established a sequence of higher lows.
However, yesterday's attempt to push towards 10,800 failed, and the 30-minute chart has spent much of the overnight session consolidating below its daily pivot at 10683.
My expectation today is for an initial recovery towards 10,683-700, followed by a decision on whether the FTSE can break higher or whether sellers regain control. We may well see a buy the rumour sell the news pattern today ahead of the US CPI, and if the FTSE100 does dip initially from the daily pivot level then a buy around the 10600 level would fit well as we have S1 and the 30m 200ema here, along with the green 2h coral.
I remain cautiously bullish on the broader recovery, but I'm less convinced about an immediate breakout than I was yesterday.
